🌷 Who the Rose Was Named After
The Marylou Whitney rose was named in honor of Marylou Whitney, the celebrated Saratoga Springs philanthropist and socialite known for her generosity, elegance, and dedication to community life. The naming rights were purchased by her husband, John Hendrickson, as a special gift for her 85th birthday.
Marylou had always adored roses and even dreamed of creating one of her own. When she learned a rose would carry her name, she famously said:
“I love having the smell of roses near me… I put rosewater in the bathtub so I can smell like a rose, and now I am one!”
Her long legacy includes supporting cultural and civic institutions in Saratoga, including historic preservation efforts and charitable projects that enriched the region for decades. The rose bearing her name reflects her timeless grace, generosity, and love for beauty.
