Claire Austin was bred by Austin (UK, 1999) and introduced in the UK by David Austin Roses in 2007. It is also known as Clair Austin Gpt and AUSprior.
The "Claire Austin" rose is a versatile variety that can be grown as either a shrub or a climber. It reaches a height of 120–360 cm and a width of approximately 100 cm. The flowers are 8–10 cm in diameter, with 100–120 petals. The blooms start as cup-shaped lemon buds and gradually open into large, creamy-white flowers with a classic English musk fragrance. The petals are arranged in an ideal concentric pattern, slightly looser in the center, and emit a strong, pleasant scent. It blooms continuously from late spring to autumn but is less tolerant of high temperatures. In hot weather, the flowers may last only 1–2 days, while they perform better in cooler conditions.
The rose has good rain resistance, though prolonged rain may cause small dark pink spots on the outer petals.
The shrub form of "Claire Austin" is elegant, with minimal spreading and slightly arching branches. It has relatively few thorns and moderate overall disease resistance.
This variety is named after David Austin's daughter, Claire Austin, who runs a nursery specializing in hardy plants, including some of the best irises, peonies, and lilies in the UK.
In 2011, it won the Silver Medal at the Australian National Rose Trials.
